Install Deck

Are you about to install a deck, but you’re not sure where to start? Well, the first thing you’ll need to know is what your budget will be. A deck that is an addition to your home can increase the value of your property and make it more desirable to potential buyers if you’re planning on selling the home in the future. Decks can come in all shapes and sizes, and usually, the only issue stopping you from having that perfect completed deck is your finances. One of the highest costs to install a deck is the actual decking boards and the cost of hiring a landscaper or builder to complete the job.

Decks are an excellent addition to any home, and they can incorporate all sorts of other elements. For example, you can build a patio or veranda over it for some shade from the summer heat after your deck is installed (or at the same time your deck is built). If the decking leads to your garden, you can also add in some backyard paving to complete your garden. It’s important to consider what other parts of the garden you want to complete simultaneously, as you can roll the costs of these into one easy to manage personal loan.

The size and function of your deck can largely depend on what you plan on doing with it. Are you a casual morning coffee person with your significant other, or are you interested in throwing weekend parties with all your friends? Many people may consider that a deck is not much more than a small space for a few tables and chairs. But there are plenty of things that you can add to a deck to make it a complete outdoor space. For example, you can install the ultimate outdoor kitchen, so you can truly be the king of the barbeque! If crafting the perfect pizza is more to your liking, a quality wood heater and pizza oven will be ideal. Or, perhaps you’d like to add some cafe blinds and a roof to your deck to keep the wind and rain out so you can convert the deck into an outdoor room. If you’re more into entertaining guests, a popular extra when you install a deck is a home bar; add in some party lighting and a few fans to create the ultimate atmosphere.

How much does it cost to install a deck?

The total cost to install a deck will vary because of the different materials available. However, a treated pine deck will cost about $50 to $200 per square metre. If you’d prefer to use hardwood (Spotted Gum, Merbau, etc.), then the cost of your deck will be approximately $300 to $400 per square metre, but these often look better and last longer. Another factor to consider when planning your budget is the height of the deck. When decks are over a certain height, you’ll need to install railings, and safety gear may need to be used during the construction. If you are adding a lot of weight to the top of a deck (e.g., a spa), you may need to add extra support posts and joists, which will increase your overall costs.

When you’re planning to install a deck, it is advisable to check with your local council regarding any permits. Councils have different rules for decks, with some requiring permits for decks over a certain height or if they are attached to an existing building. The fees for applying for a building permit should form a part of your overall budget. You may find a landscaper that will apply for the permits on your behalf if they design the overall project for you.

If you plan to have a labourer install a deck, you’ll need to factor in that cost. General labour charges for decking will cost about $200 per square metre. Decks are a reasonably straightforward job for someone handy with tools, but many people prefer a professional finish. In any home renovation, you can usually complete a part of the project yourself. When building a deck, you can complete the site prep to save some of your labour costs. If you’d like to do some of the work yourself, it is best to discuss it with your builder first.

How to apply for a loan to cover the cost of installing a deck?

At MoneyMe, you can apply for a personal loan from $5000 to $50,000, and this can be used to install a deck or any renovation costs (bathroom remodel, kitchen upgrade, etc.). Applying for your loan is quick and easy, and it is completed online. You can enter all your details, including how much you’d like to borrow and the loan length. Then, we’ll perform a few checks on your suitability for the loan and provide you with an answer regarding approval in only a few minutes (during business hours). Once your loan is approved, the funds are available in less than a day, and then you can get started on planning and installing your deck.

With a MoneyMe loan, our rates are highly competitive against the big four banks. In addition, you have the option of paying out the loan early without incurring any penalties. Knowing how you’ll finance it is often the first stage when you’re planning out any home improvements, such as a deck installation. It gives you enough information to completely know what style of deck you can afford and what extras you may like to include. If you’ve worked out a budget for your build, it is always good to add in a little extra (about 10%), so you’re covered for any unknown issues, such as an increase in timber prices.

We all know that home renovation projects are nowhere near cheap, but with a MoneyMe personal loan, you can get the same-day funds you need to start your bathroom renovation, kitchen upgrade or front yard landscaping in no time. MoneyMe is the official finance partner of the renovation TV show on 7two called DVine Living.
